Communication, Conflict and Boundaries in Film Production
The science of conflict on set, and how to work with it

A talk for anyone who works in film production and on a film set.

Conflict is part of making films, and handled well it makes the work better. Producers sit between creative ambition and practical limits, and much of the job is keeping people working well together when things get hard, often while stepping in between colleagues who disagree.

In this talk psychologist and neuropsychologist Katherine Dennis González explains what happens in the brain and body during conflict, and why tiredness and uncertainty make it harder for everyone on set to stay clear. She looks at the difference between conflict that moves a production forward and conflict that wears people down, what research says about mediating fairly between colleagues, and how to hold boundaries in an industry where professional and private life often overlap. Along the way she separates common myths from what the evidence supports, with two short exercises you can do from your seat.

You’ll leave with practical tools you can use straight away, including how to deliver difficult news early and clearly, how to help two people in disagreement hear each other, and how to set a boundary in a way the other person can work with.
